People say its nature or nurture who creates serial
killers, I say “profiling”
what is profiling, it is basically an FBI’s method of
catching the serial killers according to Wikipedia it can be defined as “profiling is used to detect and classify the
major personality and behavioral characteristics of an individual based upon
analysis of the crime or crimes the person committed".
hence there must be similarities between crimes to
identify them which is particularly useful in some cases especially for those
killers who have a history, of mental disorders but the profiling never guaranteed
what was coming next and in most cases, like it was even proven terribly wrong,
some serial killers do suffer from an anti-social personality disorder (APD),
even deeper mental illness, like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or borderline
personality disorder, which affect their ability to tell right from wrong. For
example, David Berkowitz (aka the Son of Sam) took the lives of 6 people. He
claimed that his neighbor's dog told him to kill. Hence diagnosed with paranoid
schizophrenia. Albert Fish (raped,
killed, and cannibalized hundreds of children) he had a psychopathic
personality without psychosis, Jeffrey Dahmer was diagnosed with a borderline
personality disorder
but For those people who believe that all serial
killers have mental issues and it can be solved by such profiles is a myth, as
most serial killers are not insane, they don’t hear voices in a room, they
don’t hallucinate they know the difference between right and wrong, the case of
Ted Bundy is the best example, who has no issue fond out by anyone at any stage
of his life people generally considered him as a very pleasant fellow and even
the judge called him a very bright man with a good sense of humor this is the
very reason why he was giving the authorities a tough time in proving him guilty
but the moment after he was caught and proved guilty sudden was accused of so
many mental diseases (like bipolar disorder etc ), think about it if you
closely analyze anyone around you, you will find at least 3-4 psychological
disorders in them, the media was so obsessed with him that he was asked time
and again about being a lonely or tortured child which he denied and was
confirmed by the calmness and loving nature of his mother, psychological trauma
such as "telling a kid you mother is not who you think" but still
living with the same loving mother is in no way an abusing childhood but part
of a sad memory as they were still together, this was even tried to fix by the
psychiatrists studying Mr. Bundy but was denied by this x psychology student
another reason for his killing was that he wanted to
be a politician (famous) and worked briefly for Seattle crime commission where he has access to a lot of crime
statistics, the record-keeping system he knew how the cases were taken care of,
what the police did and what they did not do so he was convinced that he will
never get caught. He saw the places where someone smart enough can take
advantage of
In summary, only these things are responsible for the
killings
1. Huge
coverage and brainwashed by the media(read more )
2.
Opportunity (read more )
3. Knowing
that we won’t get caught (like just discussed in ted Bundy's case)
Behaviorist John Broadus Watson (1930 ) was correct
when he said: “Give me a dozen healthy infants, well-formed, and my own
specified world to bring them up in and I’ll guarantee to take anyone at random
and train him to become any type of specialist I might select—doctor, lawyer,
artist, merchant-chief and, yes, even beggar-man and thief, regardless of his
talents, penchants, tendencies, abilities, vocations, and race of his
ancestors.”
Psychopaths were characterized by the
"profilers" as a white male, usually from low to the middle-class
background, having a troubled past, usually intelligent but as students, they
have difficulty focusing, most of the killers were good looking guys, as are
mostly high achievers because they are the ones who go after what they want,
mostly aged from 15 to 35. isolated, etc
All of these criteria have been proved wrong by many
people such as
Like Black woman serial killer (e.g Clementine Barnabe
) Albert fish and john Wayne Gacy were grandfathers, who among other crime they
killed and molested children when he started killing, People like Richard
Starrett was raised in a normal childhood and healthy environment
oxford psychologist Kevin Dutton made psychopaths so
attractive that even I want to be one, for example, he said “the best chief
executives, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers tend to be psychopaths .. and that
is how it is made a very charming term
The term profile began to use as there were so many
similarities between the killings of people, hence it was thought that this can
help to solve the murder mysteries but it is what I call “ the reason what
initiated it in the modern definition, for example, there is a beautifully
textured checklist of the psychopath created by Dr.Robert Hare, try to give
your self marks in it or you will see you are one of them and most people are.
Psychopathy checklist
It is considered as the most authentic way to predict
psychological behavior of an individual, the rules to score the test, according
to business insider is “On each criterion, the subject is ranked on a 3-point
scale: (0 = item does not apply, 1 = item applies somewhat, 2 = item definitely
applies). The scores are summed to create a rank of zero to 40. Anyone who
scores 30 and above is probably a psycho.” Following are here are the infamous
20 questions:
1. Do you
exhibit glib and superficial charm?
2. Do you
have a grandiose (exaggeratedly high) estimation of self?
3. Do you
have a constant need for stimulation?
4. Are you a
pathological liar?
5. Are you
cunning and manipulative?
6. Do you
have a lack of remorse or guilt?
7. Do you
have a shallow affect (superficial emotional responsiveness)?
8. Are you
callous, and do you lack empathy?
9. Do you
have a parasitic lifestyle?
10. Do you
have poor behavioral controls?
11. Are you
sexually promiscuous?
12. Did you
display early behavior problems?
13. Do you
lack realistic long-term goals?
14. Are you
overly impulsive?
15. Are you
irresponsible?
16. Do you
fail to accept responsibility for own actions?
17. Have you
had many short-term marital relationships?
18. Do you
have a history of juvenile delinquency?
19. Have you
experienced a revocation of conditional release?
20. Do you
display criminal versatility?
Now Fit yourself or anyone you know in the list or and
then award marks accordingly, most of us fit the list or the people with HUMAN
nature get above 30, referring to them as "human natured people" is
because of the reason that there are ups and downs but they will not kill in
any circumstances if they were allowed to do the question is those who got 30
or above are supposed to start killing right away?
Scientific evidence claim that we can identify serial
killers as young as 4 years their brain functions differently from normal
children Studies of children for example who have diagnosed with “attention
deficient” and “conduct disorder” were followed and half of them were arrested
before they reach 18, but those who were treated at a very young age were cured
yet there are so many people who have these disorders and they have lived their
life without harming anyone
one case
scenario is of James Fallon (a UC Irvine School of Medicine neuroscientist)
using a PET scanner He accidentally found out that his brain patterns are of
same of a psychopath, he also admits that he does have serial killers in his
family and joked about some of his behavior which was considered odd in terms
of relationships but that does not make a normal guy a killer and hence despite
having the brain of a so-called serial killer he is not a killer
I do agree
that Thomas Hobbes suggests that the nature of homosexuals is extremely violent
but they don’t always show this side of their reality, there is violence in
every one of us for example, we like wrestling though it is clear that
professional wrestling is a pretend sport, yet it gets higher and higher rating
which keeps it we feel pleasured with seeing people, it is the same for other
movies we know they are fictional stories yet we fall for them but does it
makes
Jon Ronson (author of The Psychopath Test) claim that
1 in 100 regular people is a psychopath, higher the achiever in a place
increase the presence more number of Psychopaths, This statement in its self is
an encouragement to become one
almost 95% of people face some kind of tragedy when
they are kids for example from their parents, bullying by school fellow or even
something rude behavior by the siblings. but this feature is so highlighted in
the serial killer cases that sometimes they feel sympathy, the thing kept in
mind is that people who suffer from child abuse 99% don’t become psychopaths,
while 1 % end up killing people,
An Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View is a
1974 book by social psychologist Stanley Milgram experiment suggested that 60%
humans tend to follow because they want to follow and torture each other, by
interpretation this one among many
conclusions I believe that they are doing so because they have a reason
to justify their behavior, each and every one of us tends to commit any type of
crime when we are able to give a reason which will make us feel less guilty for
example a German serial killer Rudolf Pleil (killer of 10 females )told the policemen “what I did was no such a great harm with all
these surplus women nowadays, anyone I had such a great time “
Caltech and Stanford did a very interesting Study
which Shows Price Influences Perception In a wine experiment, for example, they
claim that the wine with higher price taste better unaware of the fact that
those were the same wine in different glasses, this is how the brain works when
you tell it anything it becomes the reality, and even scans of their brain
supported the reports, a region in the brain called medial orbitofrontal cortex
or mOFC shows higher activity when they drank the wine they thought were higher
in price, it shows the character of the brain that If you are told enough time
that you have everything it takes to be a psychopath, with time the brain with
the right circumstance will become one,
Hence ted Bundy’s quote is considered disturbing by
some but is a bitter reality as anyone anytime can be converted to one …
“We serial killers are your sons, we are your
husbands, we are everywhere. And there will be more of your children dead
tomorrow.”
